Good example of a bad idea. It’s called Captcha2

Lately, I’ve been spending time compiling information about various Captcha tool implementations.

Captcha2, located at http://www.captcha2.com, is one that I spent some time reading about.

The Captcha2 website contains a sample of their tool.

This is a free tool that appears to be in suspended beta testing.  I had a hard time finding real world sites using this tool. which is a good thing.  Why?  Because the developer doesn’t even acknowledge aaccessibility, and, services like Solona cannot solve this kind of captcha.  Why?

Captcha2 works like this:  you see a message that says “locate the “Y” in the image below and click on it.

Basically, the letter Y is embedded in a single image with about 5 or 6 other letters.  The user must locate the Y and simply click on it.  There is no translation or decoding to do.  It is like an image map and the solution is located at a particular X Y coordinate.  If you click on anything besides the solution, the screen presents a new image.  According to the site, an IP address is locked out for 10 minutes after 10 attempts to solve the Captcha.

The website does not allow for registration, and there are no signs of recent activity.

What’s worse is that they were offering Captcha2 for free.  So a site administrator thinks it’s a great deal, yet it completely leaves out the idea of ccessibility.  This kind of technology, if successful, is very dangerous.
